The Clemens Center for the Performing Arts in Elmira, NY, is currently seeking a seasoned development professional responsible for all fundraising activities including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and acknowledgement of current and potential donors.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will lead annual fund development and planned giving, foundation and corporate giving, project grants and special events. The Director will maintain and grow the Clemens Center’s individual and business membership. Working with Executive Director, the Director will engage, leverage and lead the Board of Trustees in development programs, and ensure that development activities align with the Center’s strategic plan to meet mission and ensure its financial health.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3-5 years’ of experience and proven track record in fund raising and management including balancing departmental budget.
  • Individual must be a self-starter, a detail person, with excellent communication skills—verbal, written, public speaking, and interpersonal—as well as experience tracking cultivation and donor activity in a CRM, good judgment, and the ability to handle confidential information.
  • Nonprofit experience desirable.

 

Key Job Responsibilities:

Position is accountable for growing the external funding of the organization. Work with the Executive Director on annual budget revenue and expense targets for department with input from department staff.

 

Annual Fund Development

  • Assist with conceptualizing the annual business and individual membership benefits programs, and creating necessary materials.
  • Oversee all development tactics including direct mail, email, telephone, events and displays.
  • Coordinate with Director of Finance to document all transactions.
  • Manage sponsorship program process for Playbill printings; gathering logos, images, and text from member businesses for printer; arrange layout and oversee image quality; deliver completed Playbills to sponsors after printing.
  • Oversee successful completion and signing of renewal and acknowledgment letters.
  • Oversee non-renewal contacts.
  • Oversee After Show contacts.
  • Evaluate program and recommend strategies to Executive Director.
  • Meet with Events & Memberships Committee monthly to review progress.
  • Update revenue goals and strategies annually.

 

Foundations & Grants:

  • Work with Executive Director to formulate project concepts and seasonal general operating request amounts. Assist with editing grant narratives and budgets.
  • Produce and track grant applications/proposals to local, state, regional, and national funding agencies. Coordinate with Director of Finance to document all transactions.
  • Research new funding sources among national foundations and corporations.
  • Oversee completion of final reports as required.
  • Meet regularly with local Foundation representatives to inform and keep abreast of concerns.

 

Special Events:

  • Oversee successful completion of annual special events including Spotlight Spectacular, year-end and other special appeals.
  • Serve as event coordinator and host for Spotlight Spectacular VIP Experience including soliciting caterer, entertainment, etc., and coordinate wine pull, silent auction, and/or raffles.
  • Solicit business and individual sponsor support.
  • Track revenue, in-kind donations, and expenses.
  • Oversee all communications for special events from printed and electronic materials to mailing lists, and distribution.
  • Evaluate program and recommend strategies to Executive Director.

 

Leadership and Major Gift Prospect Cultivation and Solicitation:

*     Recommend to Executive Director prospects for leadership and major gift cultivation and solicitation. Assist in coordinating strategy and follow-through.

*     Recommend to Executive Director and Nominating & Governance Committee potential Board Members and other committee leadership.

*   Coordinate visits by Executive Director and other Board Members with prospects.

 

Capital Campaigns

Serve as fundraising team coordinator during any Capital Campaigns to administer all aspects of fundraising, including: 

*         Donor and prospect research and cultivation.

*         Development of solicitation strategies.

*         Campaign volunteers’ education, orientation, coordination, and motivation.

*         Coordination and follow-up on prospect cultivation, acknowledgments, and appreciation.

*         Correspondence with all donors.

*         Coordination of donor records.

*         Collection of annual pledges.

*         Coordination of work with consultants.

*         Coordination of campaign materials.

 

Manage Development Department and Staff

*         Develop/implement and regularly update long-range plan for department.

*         Recommend options for staffing.

*         Provide supervision and regular evaluation of staff.

*         Approve bi-weekly time sheets.

*         Produce a training track for each staff position.

*         Provide steps toward continuous improvement for each staff position.

 

Other:

*         Coordinate gatherings where donor cultivation or direct fundraising is a major purpose.

*         Develop and implement planned giving program to help provide long term support and stabilization.

*         Oversee fulfillment of requests for donations of restored box seats.

*         Attend monthly Board Meetings when requested.

*         Attend all weekly staff meetings, department, and appropriate committee meetings.

*         Assist with public relations activities at Clemens Center events.

*         Coordinate development activities with marketing department.

*         Participate in professional development organizations, activities, and workshops.

*        Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
